Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker contender on the planet by quite a few of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wished to learn whatever he possibly could about poker. Phil would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t let the negative comments from others destroy his ambition of becoming one of the greatest poker players on the planet.
Phil began competing intently after getting a false ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a teaching experience and winning wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved two final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he defeated many of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Phil credits his achievements to dedication and a continuing passion for poker. Phil says that he’s picking up skills every single day and is quite humble about his accomplishments. Phil admits to making errors every single game of poker and always aspires to get better.
Even though Phil has won some big-time tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a regular basis.
