Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker contender on the globe by many of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before reaching turning 1. His grandfather taught Phil penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to discover every little thing he could about the game. Phil routinely would tell his elders that he was going to be a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the adverse feedback from others destroy his goal of being one of the strongest poker players on the planet.
He began playing intently after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for Phil were a teaching experience and winning was not a normal thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made two final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he defeated many of the well known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Sin City. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his success to dedication and a continuing passion for the game of poker. He says that he’s picking up skills every day and is very abashed about his success. Phil admits to making mistakes every single game of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Although Ivey has won some big tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a regular basis.
